The number of city people stopping in Charlevoix during the warm weather is larger than that of any previous year. The Fountain City House has a large number of guests and many private homes are entertaining a number. Charlevoix stands first among northern summer resorts.

Never within the memory of the oldest inhabitant has "Old Sol" shed such everlasting hot rays upon the earthly denizens of this region. On the 16th and 17th the mercury reached 102 in the shade, and some report even higher than that, such excessive heat was of short duration however.

The bridge-tender has erected a hemlock mansion at the South end of the bridge, and is at his post night and day.

The Charlevoix school board have employed F. W. Mayne, of St. Lawrence Co., N. Y., as principal of our schools for the ensuing year. Prof. Mayne is a graduate of one of the New York State Normal schools, and has the best of recommendations. Miss Lottie Ainslie of this village will conduct the primary department.

From the Petoskey Record: "An important basis of the prosperity of Petoskey, or any other town, is the development of the surrounding country. Some indications of this latter was seen by our correspondent, on a recent trip to Advance, a little village about 18 miles south-west of Petoskey, on Pine Lake.-"

Petoskey, you know, is the hub around which revolves the world and part of Canada. If these Petoskey people keep on inflating their imagination they will have Chicago and Charlevoix of secondary importance to Petoskey and part of the "surrounding country."

We visited the head of Pine Lake on Friday and noted many signs of improvement. A. J. Beardsley's mill is nearly in shape to receive the grinding machinery and Mr. Beardsley anticipates a good run of business. The new mill is growing into shape and will be operating before the snow flies. The stores of Mr. Batchelor and Mr. Thompson seem to be thriving as also does the hotel of Mr. Hall. The new hotel of Geo. Thompson has recently been opened to the public. Everything is in a healthy condition at the head of Pine Lake.

The Odd Fellows Hall is nearly ready for occupancy.

O. D. Mason is making rapid progress with his new building on the south side of the harbor.

The new organ for the M. E. church has arrived.

There is no better way of picturing the country between the Charlevoix of nine years ago and that of to-day than by gazing southward from the bridge for a moment, over our beautiful village and its thrifty places of business, and then, turning upon your heel and gazing upon the "old store" which stand untenanted, solitary and alone. Less than a decade ago this was the only merchantile establishment in Charlevoix. Ten years hence a greater contrast can be pictured.
