Earl Young to Mark
No.84 on Saturday

Architect Earl Young, a man who has devoted a lifetime and then some to keeping Charlevoix beautiful, will celebrate his 84th birthday, Saturday, March 31.

Mr. Young's unique architectural accomplishments, from the turreted Weathervane and Lodge motels, the rustic Weathervane Inn on the channel, and his story-book homes on Round Lake, Park Ave., and in Boulder Park, represent a school of architecture unto themselves.

There have been many imitators over the years, but their creations lack a certain something - call it whimsey if you must call it anything - that is unique with Earl Young.

Although his eyesight and hearing are not what they once were, Mr. Young still manages to spend several hours each day in his office at the Weathervane Inn. He presently is putting the finishing touches on a history of Charlevoix, which, judging from our sneak previews, will be the most informative and entertaining book ever written about our much written-about community.

A photographer in his youth, the book will contain many pictures taken by Mr. Young more than a half-century ago.

Although small in stature, Mr. Young stands tall in the eyes of everyone who loves Charlevoix. We wish him a happy 84th --- and many more to come.
