The first architectural endeavor on the property known as Cranbrook was an Arts and Crafts English Tutor manor house built for George and Ellen Scripps Booth. The architect was the renowned Albert Kahn. This year marks its 110th birthday, making it the oldest manor home in the Detroit area. At 35,000 square feet it is the smallest but in its craftsmanship it is unsurpassed. It's a national treasure and has been recognized as such. George Booth published and owned the Detroit Evening News which became The Detroit News.
This extraordinary family gave much of their fortune to the promotion of Arts and Crafts. Learn about what motivated them. Glimpse some of the art objects and craftsmanship in the magnificent home.
